A cup of hot, regular green tea is the healthiest, with the most amount of flavonoid content, compared to all other kinds of tea. This is the result of a study by the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) in 2007, after comparing nearly 400 kinds of tea.
This result is rather surprising. After all, how can the good old regular green tea come out best out of all the new innovations? Today, are many choices: flavored green tea, instant green tea, decaffeinated green tea, loose green tea, and teabag. We are always told that what is newer must be better as consumers, but this is simply not true when applied to tea.
The big boys like Lipton and Coca-Cola are selling green tea energy drinks. However, it is best to avoid green tea energy drink. The energy drinks contain a high concentration of caffeine, and experts recommend 300mg of caffeine per day as safe. According to the United Kingdom Tea Council, this is no more than six cups per day.
Instant or bottled tea only contains a fraction of healthy catechins from hot regular green tea. It also contains fluoride, which is subject to much controversy including to being harmful to teeth and bone. Lipton’s iced tea was especially under scrutiny from a 2005 study by Dr. Michael Whyte.
Regular tea contains
- 3 times more catechins than a flavored green tea.
- 2 times more catechins than a decaffeinated green tea.
- 10 times more catechins than an instant or bottled green tea.

So it is no wonder that the regular green tea is the best green tea.
